Fifth Grade Curriculum
The
fifth grade program is consistent with St. Mary’s School mission. It is meant
to prepare students for the rigors of middle school through a competitive, yet
nurturing academic, caring and Christian environment. The Intermediate
Division program
promotes self-discipline in academic, extra-curricular, and athletic programs
for the students. The faculty provides an effective, safe, and controlled
learning atmosphere, and provides support and guidance for each student. School
subject areas, activities, and sports foster the students’ intellectual,
physical, emotional, and social growth.
LANGUAGE
ARTS
In fifth grade, the curriculum is centered on the study of grammar, writing,
vocabulary, and literature. The program concentrates on applying reading skills
to intensive comprehension questions based on the novels being studied. Literary
terms are expanded upon and grammar, usage, and mechanics are reinforced.
Carefully selected words from each of the four novels and weekly spelling
practice expand vocabulary skills while reinforcing the importance of learning
and using new words in context. Critical thinking
skills are emphasized. The writing process intensifies as students write essays on a variety of topics throughout the year. Students continue to learn
how to clarify thoughts through oral presentations and written projects.
MATHEMATICS
In
fifth grade, whole numbers and basic operations are reviewed. Skills are
strengthened before the exploration of fractions and geometry. Mental math,
number sense, and estimation are also introduced and expanded. Problem solving
and reasoning skills are an integral part of the program and are integrated
throughout the course.
SCIENCE
The fifth
grade science curriculum includes strands in Life Science (The Human Body),
Physical Science (Electricity and Magnetism), and Earth Science (Earth's
Waters). Imbedded in these presentations are important study skills such as
time management, outlining, writing a strong lab report using the scientific
method, and team work. To enhance the learning process there are six
individual computer stations with Inspiration, PowerPoint, and Word software to
give students an opportunity to make elaborate well organized presentations.
The lab also houses contemporary audio/video equipment, a variety of plants and
animals, and charts and maps.
SOCIAL
STUDIES
In
the fifth grade program, study begins with discussion of how geography works.
Basic ideas of physical and human geography are introduced. These concepts are
applied to the various countries of the world. Current events activities,
research projects, group and individual presentations, and field trips enhance
the curriculum.
VISUAL ARTS
The
visual arts curriculum in fifth grade builds on the study of themes in art,
artists, art media and techniques, and the chronology and history of art.
Students develop skills to understand and appreciate artwork as they participate
in hands on art activities.
Students keep a portfolio inventory and complete a self-assessment of reflective
questions about each project completed.
