Latin Curriculum
Sixth Grade
Sixth grade students take Latin four days a week for an academic grade. The
course introduces students to concepts central to the Latin language and to
cultural aspects of the Roman civilization. The objective is to give students a
“feel” for how Latin works, help them generalize what they learn about Latin and
apply that knowledge to English, and learn a little about the Roman heritage.
Seventh Grade
For seventh-graders who elect to take Latin, the primary objective is to build
skill and confidence in reading and understanding Latin. Other objectives
include strengthening English grammar and vocabulary, learning concepts
transferable to the study of foreign languages, acquiring familiarity with Roman
culture and civilization and sharpening analytical skills. Students have the
opportunity to complete projects and to compete in annual contests, both locally
and nationally. This class is equivalent to the first half of a high school
level I course.
Eighth Grade
The primary objective of this course is to continue building skill and
confidence in reading and understanding Latin. The components and secondary
objectives of seventh grade Latin are essentially unchanged. Reading
passages do increase in length and complexity, with an expanded variety of
sentence constructions and contexts. Students also compete in local and national
events. By the year’s end students are prepared to enter Latin II level of high
school study.
