An excellent commencement address was delivered by Jennifer Ruff, and Headmaster Laird's remarks brought back memories for the graduates, many who have been here since Pre-K. Father Kezar urged the class to be true to themselves as they continue their educational journey. Though they will be missed, this class is sure to have a bright future.

St. Mary's Hall Blessed after Baccalaureate

In a happy ceremony after the Baccalaureate Service for the Class of 2006, the newly constructed multipurpose center, St. Mary's Hall, was blessed by the bishop. The reception following the service and blessing was enjoyed by St. Mary's clergy, faculty, staff, students, and their families. Everyone viewed the fantastic new facility while reminiscing with the graduating class. It was certainly a special and significant day in the life of St. Mary's!

St. Mary's Sportsmanship

The Florida West Coast League, comprised of fourteen area schools, met the evening of May 15th. For the fourth time St. Mary's was voted first place in League Sportsmanship. Tied with Academy at the Lakes for the 2005-2006 school year, St. Mary's has now received first place recognition four out of  five times since this award was conceived by the FWCL. Coach Sandman sends congratulations to all our students and coaches for making such a positive impression on the league.

Awards Chapel May 15th

In chapel on Monday, academic awards were given by subject area to top students in each class. Mr. Laird emphasized that many of the decisions were based on a hundredth of a point and there were a number of students with very competitive averages. Also recognized for the first time, were St. Mary's Distinguished Faculty. These teachers were honored for their outstanding service to the school. They are Faye Ennis, Maureen Ripley, Mary Branch, and Mary Jane Stewart. At the end of the service, the 2005-2006 yearbook was presented and dedicated to Mrs. Eaton and Mrs. McGrath.

Way More than a Dance

Upper School Students had a blast on May 12th as they danced, had dinner and played in a gym full of arcade type games imported to St. Mary's for the More than a Dance party. What a great way to wind down the year and celebrate the approach of summer vacation!

Sports Banquet

Students and parents gathered Thursday night, May 11th for the annual Sports Banquet. Held to recognize our many outstanding athletes for their contributions to the various school teams, the Sports Banquet culminates their efforts on the playing fields. Thanks to every student for representing St. Mary's and for continuing to be models of good sportsmanship, and thanks also to the coaches, teachers and parents who supported them.

Arts Night

The evening of May 9th, St. Mary's families enjoyed the Spring Art Show and International Music Performance. The audience was transported to exotic destinations by songs performed in foreign  languages and dances inspired by far away lands.

Mr. Laird Honored for Ten Years

In chapel on Monday May 8th, the congregation shared  a look back at St. Mary's, beginning in 1996 when Scott Laird arrived as our new headmaster. So many things have happened over the last ten years, the most apparent being construction of the completely new and beautiful school buildings we enjoy every day. Mr. Laird was surprised with pictures and music reflecting his career and accomplishments. This year's Student Headmaster, Lauren Koehler, also presented Mr. Laird with a Headmaster's List Award, and framed photo collage. Joined by his wife, Sharon, he thanked the children, teachers, and parents after receiving a standing ovation. It seems fitting that the final piece of major construction, our performing arts and multipurpose facility, is being finished just as he completes his tenth year. Congratulations Mr. Laird!

Record Number of AR Awards

May 5th found 50 students receiving Accelerated Reader awards in assembly, a record number since the beginning of the program in 1996. Three first graders passed the 100 point level, an exceptional number of points for such young readers. Achieving the high point level certificates shows individual motivation and follow through, as AR is an optional reading enrichment program. Congratulations to all award winners!

EPCOT

Fifth grade patrols had a memorable overnight trip to EPCOT and Blizzard Beach May 2nd and 3rd. This annual reward is well deserved as patrols serve the school all year long in so many capacities. Thank you fifth grade, and good luck next year in Upper School!

Wedding of Q and U

We hear happy news from Mr. Q and Ms. U, enjoying their extended honeymoon in Quebec. The weather has been warm enough for them to enjoy floating in the pool and catching their breath after a whirlwind courtship and wedding. United on April 28th in a private ceremony at St. Mary's, the couple were inflated with pride as they enjoyed the company of their Pre-K well-wishers. "We fell in love quickly," said Ms. U. "Q may be quiet, but he's also quixotic. I had no qualms at all, and I feel like quite a queen. We never quarrel or quibble, and we hope to have quadruplets!" The happy couple will reside in Tampa.

Afternoon Art a Success

Meg Carte's after school art program has been filled to capacity since its inception at the beginning of this school year. Students meet in her room directly after school on Tuesdays for an hour of creative activity. "I enjoy the change of working with a smaller group," Mrs. Carte commented. "We can tackle projects difficult to do with a larger class size."

8th Grade Visits Washington, D.C.

April 25th-28th, eighth graders enjoyed their annual trip to Washington. Our students always represent us well in the nation's capital. Their extremely busy schedule includes the major national monuments and museums, Poe's gravesite, and the popular comedy, Shear Madness, a "whodonit" where the audience gets to participate. This longest running off-broadway play in American Theatre History is always a hit. Back at school, eighth grade has graduation to look forward to!

8th Grade Surprised

April 24th, the day before their departure for Washington D.C., the eighth grade received a blessing in chapel for a safe journey. After the blessing, it was announced that instead of returning to class, they would all spend the day at the beach! Oddly enough this seemed to please them as they raced to change into shorts and board buses headed for the coast. After a relaxing day, they spent the afternoon preparing for an early flight the next morning.

Alumni Picnic

Seniors ready to graduate and set off for college reconnected at St. Mary's Sunday, April 23rd for the annual Alumni Picnic. As always, they make us proud to call them St. Mary's Alums!

The seventh grade left April 2nd for a four day adventure to Sea Camp on Big Pine Key. This trip, which compliments their science studies, allows first hand observation and exploration of the ocean life they have been studying in the classroom. It is a "St. Mary's Favorite" trip for many, and this year was no exception. Everyone came home with lots of stories from a great trip.

Spirit Week and Field Day

"Crazy Hat Day" on March 13th set the tone for a week of fun leading up to St. Mary's annual "John A. Shepard Field Day" held March 17th. The blue and gold teams competed in a variety of events including the Shuttle Run, Sack Race, 40 Yard Dash, Dodge ball, Jump Rope, Tug of War, and of course, the Knowledge Bowl. All the athletes and scholars did their best and in the end, the blue team took the cup. Thanks to Coach Sandman and the athletic department for another great Field Day. Everyone was dismissed at noon for a much anticipated Spring Break!

Some of the numbers included, "Sweet Home Alabama", "Under the Boardwalk", "Life is a Cabaret", and "Seasons of Love". "We've been working on this since last April," stated Mrs. Jungers, St. Mary's music teacher and director of the show. "The seventh grade did an awesome job!"

Passport to Paradise

Saturday March 4th, patrons at this year's annual benefit were transported to paradise, enjoying a beautiful buffet and dancing to the lively music of  Full Circle. Sales were brisk, thanks to auctioneers Steve Hill and Preston Farrior, and to spirited bidding on the part of our parents. The live auction was preceded by a surprise faculty rendition of "Hey Big Spender" which was worth the price of admission. Thank you to the Parents' Association for the hard work needed to manage such a major event, and special thanks to chairwomen Alexis Borucke, Kelly Hoffman, and Lisa Couch. The evening was a huge success!

100th Day of School!!

Hooray, 100 days! Primary students celebrated the 100th day of school on the last day of January, 2006. The Pre-K and K classes visited all four classrooms making a colorful paper chain of 100 links, crowns with 100 dots, and finding 100 candy kisses hidden in the classroom. Kindergarten licked lollipops for 100 licks, sat quietly for 100 seconds, traced numbers counting by 5's to 100 on a dot to dot heart, and finally ate special 100th day cupcakes.

Author Visits St. Mary's

On January 30th, Adrian Fogelin spoke to 3rd through 5th grades about her writing and life as an author. Librarian Ramsay Jones commented that Mrs. Fogelin was "an especially engaging speaker, one of the best visiting authors we've had to date". The writer explains, "I was a dreamy kid. I got notes on my report card that said things like, "Adrian needs to concentrate more." If I brought a hat, an umbrella, and a lunch box to school, I brought home the hat and the umbrella... or the lunch box and hat...or just the umbrella ... What was I thinking? Most of the time I wasn’t. I was imagining, making up stories about, what if...?"

Pirate Invasion!

Wednesday, January 25th: Pirates invade St. Mary's Campus! The buccaneers held us captive in the gym hoping to find recruits to join them on the open sea. When the students explained they would much rather stay in school, the good natured rogues shared their pirate booty and sailed away.

Parent Appreciation Chapel Service

In chapel on January 23rd, our students showed their appreciation for parents in song, with a special banner, and by sharing their thoughts about what make parents special. Poised lead singers were supported by a super cast that hit every mark and entertained the audience with well timed comedy. Dance numbers were neatly choreographed and executed. Elaborate sets designed by art teacher Meg Carte were delightful. This was the last 8th grade musical to be staged in St. Mary's gym, as the new mulitpurpose facility will be ready for next year's show. Everyone enjoyed this special occasion, inspired by St. Francis of Assisi.

Where's that bear?

After two days experience as St. Mary's students, Pre-K searched the school on Friday, August 19th for the missing St. Mary's bear. With the help of clues all over campus, they finally found him, dressed in uniform of course, in Mr. Laird's office. They celebrated with, what else, teddy grahams!
